Exterior Components

Nye Lubricants offers a variety of specialty greases and oils designed to protect components from wear in extreme temperature conditions, while resisting the environmental elements. Special motion control lubricants are available to reduce noise, vibration, and harshness.

When a car hits a bump, the high frictional characteristics of rubber window seals against the painted sheet-metal surfaces - can cause a light, squeaky, annoying noise called “itching.” Fluorinated oils, chemically compatible with elastomers, will stop the itching.

Windshield seal - Uniflor™ 8170
Wiper motor gears - Rheolube® 462

The one or two-track assembly that raises and lowers the window glass must withstand extreme temperatures, as well as dust, dirt, water and car wash fluids that penetrate the door cavity. A high-viscosity, silicone-based, PTFE thickened grease has proven successful in these assemblies. It resists water-washout, operates at temperatures to -40 °C, and easily passes the “Arizona Dust Test.”

Window regulator assembly - Fluorocarbon Gel 880
Window rails - Uniflor™ 8170

The small motors and gears of electrically controlled side mirrors must operate flawlessly at temperatures down to -40 °C, even when exposed to rain, saltwater, and car washes. Compounding the lubrication challenge, the plastic exterior housing acts like an acoustic amplifier that can create an annoying buzzing noise. A light viscosity, synthetic hydrocarbon damping grease withstands the cold, offers vibration and noise reduction, and resists the elements.

Power folding mirrors - NyoGel® 774VLF
Power mirror gears - Rheolube® 362HB

Door lock actuators contain plastic gearboxes with small motors. They are often expected to survive 50,000 cycles, operate at temperatures as low as -40 °C and resist rain, car wash detergents and other environmental stressors. A synthetic hydrocarbon, lithium-soap grease is a cost-effective solution for this application. Some OEMs require door actuators to operate virtually silently while others want audible feedback when the door is locked or unlocked. Synthetic damping greases offer an economical solution to provide the desired sound control.

Connectors - NyoGel® 760G
Switches - Instrument Grease 732C
Latch mechanisms - Rheolube® 362HB
Door handles - Uniflor™ 8172
EPDM BSR itching - Uniflor™ 8470

Key cylinders are installed after cars are painted. If any defects are found in the paint job, a Xenon light is used to cure paint touch-ups rapidly. The light also radiates sufficient heat to cause some cylinder greases to leach, which can lead to discolored paint. PFPE lubricants can “take the heat,” to prevent these grease-based paint blemishes.

Key cylinder - Uniflor™ 8512

Gas doors and charging port covers require PFPE lubricants that resist harsh chemicals and extreme environmental conditions while also controlling precise motion. If plastic compatibility is not a problem for charging ports, a hydrocarbon grease may be used.

Gas door hinge area - Uniflor™ 8472
Charging port cover -  Uniflor™ 8172, Rheolube® 363

Connector greases protect against contact wear, environmental corrosion, and fretting corrosion to extend contact life and prevent electrical failure.

Head & taillight connectors - NyoGel® 760G
Charging port connector - Rheotemp™ 768G
Trailer tow connector - NyoGel® 760G
Window switches - NyoGel® 774 Series

Trunk latches require PFPE lubricants that resist harsh chemicals and extreme environmental conditions while also controlling precise motion.
